Abstract:

The papers in this document were produced during an eight-week Workshop held at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine from September 1 to October 26, 1988. Ten participants were invited from six African countries - Burundi, Liberia, Mali, Morocco, Nigeria and Senegal. The central aim of the Workshop was to produce a number of detailed studies based on the data collected recently under the international program of Demographic and Health Surveys organized by the Institute for Resource Development. The articles were written by Christie Adekunle, Véronique Filippi, Wendy Graham, Patricia Onyenmunwa, Eric Udjo, El-Hadji Malick Diame, Salif Ndiaye, Pauline Airey, Baba Traore, Mamadou Traore, Oona Campbell, David Dunn, Fatu Yumkella, Al-Hassan Conteh, Patricia H. David, Evasius K. Bauni, Vincent Ndikumasabo, Linda H. Werner, Jackson Mkiza-Gapere, M'hammed Al-Jem, Ian Timaeus, Samar Aoun, and Abdeltif Cahaouai.
