Unhealthy Feeding Practices

Percentage of children fed a sweet beverage, selected sentinel unhealthy foods, and percentage of children not fed any vegetables or fruits

Definition

Percentage of children age 6-23 months who:

1)      Drank a sweet beverage during the previous day or night.

2)      Ate selected sentinel unhealthy foods during the previous day or night.

3)      Were not fed any vegetables or fruits during the previous day or night.

Coverage:

Population base: Youngest child age 6-23 months living with the mother (KR file)

Time period: Previous day or night before the survey

Numerators:

Number of youngest children age 6-23 months living with the mother who:

1)      Drank a sweet beverage during the previous day (v410 = 1 or v410as = 1 or v411s = 1 or v413s = 1 or v413as = 1 or v413bs = 1 or v413c = 1 or v413d = 1)

2)      Ate selected sentinel unhealthy foods during the previous day (v414r = 1 or v414t = 1 or v414w = 1)

3)      Were not fed any vegetables or fruits during the previous day (v414i = 0 or v414j = 0 or v414k = 0 or v414l = 0 or v414a = 0)

Denominators: Number of youngest children age 6-23 months living with the mother. See Calculation of denominator in Percentage of children fed the minimum dietary diversity, the minimum meal frequency, the minimum milk feeding frequency, and the minimum acceptable diet for the selection for the denominator.

Variables: KR file.

Based on DHS-8 standard questionnaires. Other variables may be needed if additional survey-specific liquid and foods are included.

Calculation

Numerator divided by denominator, multiplied by 100.

Handling of Missing Values

Specific liquids and foods: Missing values and “don’t know” excluded from numerators in all percentages but included in denominators.

Notes and Considerations

Country-specific liquids and foods may be added to each category. Percentages are based only on children living with the mother. Children living elsewhere are excluded from both the numerators and the denominators.

If the last-born child is deceased or not living with the mother, questions on foods and liquids are asked of the prior child born in the two years preceding the interview.
