Abstract: Abstract: The present study focuses on the prevalence and correlates of child work in selected states of India by utilising the 2005-2006 National Family Health Survey data. Results show that every eighth child aged 5-14 years is engaged in work in India. Further, the duration of work by children aged 5-11 years is two and a half hours, and that of older children (12-14 years) is six hours in a day. The study provides ample evidence to state that chances of work participation increases to almost double when children are not attending school. The findings also suggest that child work is positively associated with social, economic and familial disadvantages. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
