This chapter addresses female genital cutting (FGC)—also called female circumcision and female genital mutilation (FGM). Data on FGC in DHS surveys comes from an optional module of questions. FGC involves cutting some part of the clitoris or labia, usually as part of a traditional ceremony or rite of passage into adolescence.
