Availability of sufficient drinking water

Percentage of de jure population with sufficient water available when needed

Definition

Percentage of de jure population with drinking water available in sufficient quantities in last month

Coverage:

Population base: De jure household population (HR file or PR file)

Time period: month before the survey

Numerators: Number of de jure population (HR file: hv012; PR file: hv201 = 1) with sufficient availability of drinking water in the month preceding the survey (hv201b = 0)

Denominator: Number of de jure population in households

Variables: HR file, PR file.

hv012

Number of de jure members (if using HR file)

hv102

Usual resident (if using PR file)

hv201b

Water for drinking not sufficient in the last month

hv005

Household sample weight

Calculation

Numerator divided by denominator, multiplied by 100.

Handling of Missing Values

Population with don’t know or missing information are included in the denominator.

Notes and Considerations

The question is specifically phrased about the availability of drinking water and not water for other purposes.

Changes over Time

Information pertaining to the availability of water was introduced in DHS-7. At that time, the statistics were restricted to households/populations using piped or tube well/borehole water as a source for drinking water, plus households/populations using bottled water for drinking and piped or tube well/borehole water for cooking and handwashing. In addition, the reference period was the 2 weeks preceding the survey, and lack of availability was defined as water not being available for at least 1 day.

In DHS-8, the indicator was revised to match MICS6 more closely such that the relevant question is now asked of all households, regardless of drinking water source, and the time frame asked about is one month. In addition, data are tabulated for the de jure population and not households.
