Medicines for HIV Treatment and Prevention

 

Percentages of women and men who have heard of antiretroviral medicines (ARVs) that treat HIV, who know that the risk of mother-to-child transmission can be reduced by the mother taking special drugs, and who have heard of pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP); Among women and men who have heard of PrEP, percentage who approve of people taking PrEP to prevent acquiring HIV

 

Definition

 

1)      Percentage of women and men age 15-49 who have heard of ARVs that treat HIV.

2)      Percentage of women and men age 15-49 who know that the risk of mother-to-child transmission can be reduced by the mother taking special drugs.

3)      Percentage of women and men age 15-49 who have heard of PrEP.

4)      Among women and men age 15-49 who have heard of PrEP, the percentage who approve of people who take PrEP to reduce their risk of acquiring HIV.

2)      Number of women (or men) who respond “Yes” to the question, “Are there any special medicines that a doctor or a nurse can give to a woman infected with HIV to reduce the risk of transmission to the baby?” (women: v824 = 1; men: mv824 = 1)

3)      Number of women (or men) who have heard of PrEP (women: v859 in 1:3; men: mv859 in 1:3)

4)      Number of women (or men) who respond “Yes” to the question, “Do you approve of people who take a pill every day to prevent getting HIV?” (women: v859 =1; men: mv859 = 1)

Calculation

 

The numerator divided by the denominator, expressed as a percentage. If a respondent has not heard of HIV, they are included in the denominator but excluded from the numerator.
