1) Percentage of de jure population without drinking water on the premises.
2) Percent distribution of de jure population in households without drinking water on premises by the person who usually collects drinking water used in the household: Adult female age 15 or older, adult male age 15 or older, female child under age 15, male child under age 15, or person not in household.
Coverage:
Population base: De jure household population (HR file or PR file)
Time period: Current status at time of survey
Numerators:
1) Number of de jure population (HR file: hv012; PR file: hv201 = 1) without drinking water on the premises (hv201 ≠ in 11, 12, 13 & hv235 = 3 & hv204 ≠ 0) excluding those with piped water to a neighbor (hv201 ≠ 13) and those with a reported time to collect water greater than zero (hv204 in 1:990)
2) Number of de jure population (HR file: hv012; PR file: hv201 = 1) without drinking water on the premises (hv201 ≠ in 11, 12, 13 & hv235 = 3 & hv204 ≠ 0) by person who usually collects drinking water (hv236a, hvidx, hv104, hv105) excluding those with piped water to a neighbor (hv201 ≠ 13) and those with a reported time to collect water greater than zero (hv204 in 1:990)
Denominators:
a) De jure population (HR file: hv012; PR file: hv201 = 1)
b) De jure population without drinking water on the premises (HR file: hv012; PR file: hv201 = 1 & hv201 ≠ in 11, 12, 13 & hv235 = 3 & hv204 ≠ 0)
Variables: HR file, PR file.

Numerator divided by denominator, multiplied by 100. Percent distribution adds up to 100 percent.
Unsure, don’t know or missing information are included in the denominator.
Those without drinking water on the premises excludes water piped to a neighbor and those reporting a round trip collection time of zero minutes.
In DHS-V, information was collected on the person who usually fetches water for the household based on the following categories: adult woman, adult man, female child under 15 years old, male child under 15 years old, other (hv236). Whether or not the person was in the household was not determined. The relevant questions to collect such information was dropped in DHS-VI.
In DHS-8, information on the person who usually collects water for the household is again collected, but with an important difference. Now, the individual is named by the respondent to the household questionnaire and their line number is selected from among the individuals listed in the household roster (hv236a). This enables the age, sex, and other characteristics of this individual to be determined. If the person is not listed in the household roster, this information is collected.
