Notes and Considerations

See also Notes and Considerations for Percentage of women who have ever experienced sexual violence, and who experienced sexual violence in the 12 months preceding the survey.

Changes over Time

In 2021, the question on perpetrators (other than the husband/partner) of sexual violence asked of women who reported sexual violence by a non-husband/intimate partner, was changed to allow women to report multiple perpetrators. The earlier question allowed women to report only the person who perpetrated the violence the very first time they had experienced sexual violence. In that version, the maximum number of perpetrators of sexual violence that can be reported varies between ever-married and never-married women with or without an intimate partner. Ever-married women can report up to three perpetrators of sexual violence—their current or most recent husband, a former husband/partner if married more than once, and/or a non-husband/partner who was the one who perpetrated the violence the first time it occurred. Never-married women can report only one perpetrator, namely the person who perpetrated the sexual violence the time it first occurred.
