Prevalence of Circumcision: Girls 0-14

Percentage of girls circumcised

Definition

Percentage of girls age 0-14 circumcised.

Coverage:

Population base: Girls age 0-14 (IR file, BR file)

Time period: Current status at time of survey

Numerators: Number of girls age 0-14 circumcised (g121 = 1)

Denominator: Number of girls age 0-14

Variables: IR file, BR file.

gidx_01 - _20

Daughter’s index to birth history

g121_01 - _20

Is daughter circumcised

g122_01 - _20

Daughter's age at circumcision

v005

Women's sample weight

b8

Current age of child (BR file)

Calculation

The data for the calculating prevalence of circumcision among girls age 0-14 are based on reports of daughters from the female survey respondents. This information is stored as part of the individual recode dataset (IR file). Some surveys collect information on every daughter of the respondent. These variables will be labeled with an underscore to identify daughters (e.g. g121_01).

Before using the information regarding daughters, it is necessary to transform the data into a daughter file where the daughter, rather than the survey respondent, is the unit of analysis. In Stata this is done with the reshape long command and in SPSS with the varstocases command. This is only necessary if information was collected about more than the youngest daughter.

After transforming the dataset into a daughter file, the BR file must be merged with this file to verify the daughter’s age.

Handling of Missing Values

Missing values are included with “don’t know” responses and are included in the denominator.

Notes and Considerations

The denominator includes all living daughters age 0-14 of all women who participate in the FGC module. The number of daughters age 0-14 is taken from the woman’s birth history. In the FGC module, no data is collected on the circumcision status of daughters of women who have never heard of FGC, though in this indicator they are all assumed to be ‘not circumcised.’

Circumcision status of girls is reported by their mothers.

Changes over Time

Prior to August 2013, daughters of women who had not heard of FGC were excluded from this indicator, and thus from the denominator of the estimate of FGC prevalence among daughters age 0-14. In order to compare trends between surveys, if the prior survey report was completed before August 2013, the indicator for the prior survey must include daughters of women who have not heard of FGC.
