Abstract:

This study examined the understanding of respondents in Tanzania of questions from the AIDS Indicator Survey questionnaire in Swahili about sexual practices, HIV/AIDS, and stigma. By observing survey interviews in the field, and discussing the field experience with a group of interviewers after completion of the survey, the research team was able to identify questions that respondents did not understand as intended. The team then revised the questions in Swahili and in English, and recommended that certain questions be revised for better understanding of respondents.
