Abstract:

Parental preferences for daughters or sons exhibit a wide variety of patterns throughout the world. This report documents patterns and consequences of gender preferences in countries with DHS data. The report also provides a model of how to analyze DHS data on gender preferences. The findings are based on 57 DHS surveys in 44 countries, conducted from 1986 to 1995.
