DHS Program Curricula

The DHS Program has developed a number of tools and curricula to assist host countries with survey design, implementation, data dissemination and date use. Each curriculum is carefully designed following adult learning principles.

This modular training includes activities on disseminating DHS data, reading DHS tables, interpreting data, DHS Program digital tool demonstrations, how to use PowerPoint templates, sub-national dissemination checklist, data visualization, social media, and more. Specific trainings can also be provided in English or French on the following topics:  

Data to Action: 1-2 day workshop on understand DHS results and using them to inform ecision making in policies and programs.  
Social Media for Global Health and Development: 1-day workshop where participants learn how to strategically use social media for DHS survey Dissemination.  
Visualizing DHS Data: 1-day workshop takes participants through the entire process of creating clear data visualizations, form assessing your audience to chart selection to creating and crafting a dissemination plan

The DHS Curriculum Facilitator’s Guide is a comprehensive package of ready-made training materials about understanding and used Demographic and Health Survey reports. The curriculum is designed for use in African universities and with public health program staff. Over 25 hours of instruction are divided into 8 stand-alone modules designed to be a course on its own or customized and integrated into existing curriculum. This guide is available in English or French.

This curriculum covers 14 topics and includes a facilitator’s and participant’s guided. The entire package is used to enhance the abilities of Sampling Coordinators and Statisticians of National Statistical Offices to design, develop, and work with sample surveys through different methodologies and relevant mathematical formulas.

This 5-day training enhances the capacity of health-related governmental staff and monitoring and evaluation (M & E) officers who are committed to developing knowledge and skills in creating and interpreting and health information maps. Participants learn how to create and present meaningful maps using DHS data and a QGIS software.

This curriculum includes 49 modules and addresses data collection using the SPA questionnaires. Participants are oriented in the use of computer-assisted personal interview (CAPI) and computer-assisted field editing (CAFE) programs.

This curriculum includes 49 modules and is used to teach survey data processing field staff how to process DHS surveys in CSPro software, replicate DHS tabulations, and analyze DHS data in CSPro. The training addresses key aspects of DHS survey data processing procedures such as generating dictionaries, forms, applications, and menus used during data entry; data verification, secondary editing, and imputation; as well as programs that guide the data processing team throughout all stages of data processing.

This handbook is based on adult learning principles and provides participants with the foundations of effective training design and facilitation skills with an emphasis on participatory training methods.
