2012 Tajikistan Demographic and Health Survey Round Table Discussion
THE AGENCY ON STATISTICS UNDER PRESIDENT OF THE REPUBLIC OF TAJIKISTAN

The Agency for Statistics under the President of the Republic of Tajikistan hosted a Round Table discussion on the 2012 Tajikistan Demographic and Health Survey (TjDHS) draft final report. The meeting was held on 16 September 2013 at the Agency for Statistics under the President of the Republic of Tajikistan in Dushanbe.

The Round Table discussion of the internationally recognized Demographic and Health Survey draft final report was attended by the Director of the Agency for Statistics, Bakhtiya Muhammadieva, Regional Coordinator for Europe and Eurasia at MEASURE DHS, Dr. Gulnara Semenov, United States Agency for International Development (USAID) representative Malika Makhkambaeva, and representatives from the Ministry of Health, Ministry of Economics and Development, the Ministry of Labor and Social Protection, the Research Institute of the Ministry of Labor and Social Protection, the Committee on Environmental Protection, the Committee for Youth, Sports and Tourism, the Committee on Women and Family Affairs, as well as experts of the Agency for Statistics.

Director of the Agency for Statistics, Bakhtiya Muhammadieva expressed gratitude to the Government of Tajikistan for their support and assistance during the survey process, to the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) for financial and technical support of the survey, to the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) in Tajikistan for additional funding provided to the survey, to the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Tajikistan for their consultations and training of the Agency for Statistics staff, and to staff members from the Agency for Statistics under the President of the Republic of Tajikistan and from the State Leading Information Centre, who participated in the survey and who have made the 2012 TjDHS a success.

Director of the Agency for Statistics, Bakhtiya Muhammadieva said that it is her pleasure to present the draft 2012 Tajikistan DHS final report for users of statistical data. She also noted that the 2012 TjDHS is the first of its kind in the country, conducted by the Statistical Agency in collaboration with the Ministry of Health (MOH). The 2012 TjDHS results are intended to provide the information needed to the Government, ministries and other agencies to evaluate existing social programs and to design new strategies for improving health and health services for women and children in Tajikistan, to decrease maternal and childhood mortality, and to decrease expansion of HIV/AIDS and other infectious diseases.

Regional Coordinator for Europe and Eurasia at MEASURE DHS, Dr. Gulnara Semenov, presented the draft 2012 Tajik DHS final report. Dr. Semenov noted that the TjDHS is part of the worldwide Demographic and Health Surveys program (DHS) funded by USAID, which is designed to collect data on fertility, family planning, maternal and child health and nutrition. Since 1984, DHS has provided technical assistance to collect, analyze, and disseminate accurate and representative data on population, health, HIV, and nutrition through more than 300 surveys in over 90 countries, including countries of the former Soviet Union: Azerbaijan, Armenia, Moldova, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyz Republic, Ukraine and Uzbekistan.

The 2012 Tajikistan Demographic and Health Survey’s findings have shown positive changes in health indicators in Tajikistan in recent years when compared with data from other surveys conducted in Tajikistan.
