Tackling Egypt’s FGM problem means cracking down on doctors who mutilate girls

"...At 27.2 million, Egypt has the highest number of women affected on the African continent – 87 per cent of women, aged between 15 and 49, according to the most recent Demographic and Health Survey. Drilling down further we can see there has been significant progress though between older and younger women: 97 per cent of those aged between 45 and 49 have been affected, compared with 70 percent of those aged between 15 and 19. Girls under 15 seem to be even less likely still to have undergone it. Nuances need to be considered too, such as the fact that girls are unlikely to be cut until they reach puberty – but below the age of 14, there is only a five per cent chance of a girl undergoing FGM if she is from a very wealthy family..."
